45 Used! | New! from $0.01 (as of 11/25/2012 15:23 PST)

Bangladesh

On his forty-fourth birthday Eric Newby, a self-confessed river lover, sets out on a 1200-mile journey down the Ganges River from Hardwar to the Bay of Bengal, accompanied by his wife Wanda. Things do not start smoothly as they run aground 63 times in the first six days, but gradually India's holiest river, The Pure, The Eternal, The Creator of Happiness, lives up to its many names and captures them in its spell.

Traveling in a variety of boats, most of them unsuitable, as well as by bus and bullock cart, the Newbys become intimately acquainted with the river's shifting moods and colorful history. Slowly Down the Ganges brims over with engaging characters and entertaining anecdotes, recounted in Newby's inimitable style. Best of all, he brilliantly captures the sights and sounds, the frustrations and rewards, the sheer enchantment of travel in India.

Dust jacket notes: "'For more than five years I had dreamed of a new adventure,' writes Sir Edmund Hillary, 'to travel with a group of friends from the mouth of the Ganges River upstream against the current as far as we could go...up into the mountains where the river had its beginnings.' In 1977 the 'Ocean to Sky' expedition turned that dream into reality; this is Hillary's own dramatic record of that journey. The 1500-mile-long trek provided as many challenges as the conqueror of Everest and his crew had imagined, from powering jet boats up treacherous rapids to the ultimate test of climbing Akash Parbat, above which, according to Hindu tradition, the lord Shiva received the celestial stream of Ganga into the matted locks of his hair. Hillary's narrative, supplemented with excerpts from his crew's journals and many photographs, captures the excitement and danger of the expedition...."

More than 50% Off an Aquarium Wavemaker

List Price: $541.60
Deal Price: $229.99
You Save: $311.61 (58%)
Wavemaker pumps with DC controller allow for the ability to create customized water patterns similar to reef currents and river flows found in nature. With Four operational modes to provide each user the best selection of water settings. The Continuous Flow Mode lets you adjust either pump to flow from 40-100% of maximum power to eliminate specific dead zones or create more current for coral health. Our Tidal Mode is where two pumps are positioned at opposite ends of the aquarium. Pump A runs at maximum flow while Pump B runs at low flow for 12-hour cycle. The two pumps then switch speeds after 12 hours so Pump A runs at low flow, while Pump B runs at maximum flow, simulating a natural tidal ocean current. The Turbulence Mode features both pumps begin at the lowest flow settings and increases up to maximum flow, then power off for five seconds before repeating. The run time to get from the lowest to maximum flow can be adjusted from 10-60 seconds. Continuous/Turbulence Mode is where Pump A runs continuously from 40-100% of maximum power while Pump B is in Turbulence Mode.

Expatriate Games - 662 Days in Bangladesh: An Account of Time Spent in Dhaka Not a Guide Book

Bangladesh

This is a revised for 2012 ‘warts and all account’ of a two year posting to Dhaka, Bangladesh. An ill-conceived plan to establish a western style Investment Banking office in the Bangladeshi Capital is the premise. The unfortunates who are despatched to implement this plan arrive to find no support and an impossible business environment. A six day work week, heaps of bureaucracy and Dhaka’s own brand of ‘everyday’ frustrations. Despite these daunting circumstances things do get off the ground. This is not a ‘sugar coated’ account but it does give an insight into what you will find if moving to Dhaka.

Contrary to some suggestions the author left Bangladesh having had a very positive experience. He made a great many friends and is still in touch with many of them today (including his cook who insists on telephoning in the middle of the night.)

"A lyrical homage to India's holiest, moodiest, foulest river. . . .Trojanow is the perfect mix of insider and outsider. . . . It is a treasure of a book, a must-have for anyone spending time on the Ganges and wanting to get to know her better."—Financial Times

"Funny, shocking, and always interesting."—The Spectator

Along the Ganges was voted one of the greatest travel books of all time by Condé Nast Traveler by a jury including Gore Vidal and Paul Theroux.

The River Ganges has a thousand names, and Hindu priests thought it a sin to call her a river at all. She is a goddess, the source of the world. Her waters are holy, healing, and still sold to Hindus the world over. Ilija Tojanow, an international best-selling author, traveled along the Ganges from the source, where it breaks free from the ice in the Himalayas, to the great cities. Along the way he visited the great Hindu festivals and talked to those who warn of ecological disaster caused by gigantic dams. This colorful travelogue describes a country caught between ancient traditions and astonishing modernity, and the holy river that crosses it for hundreds of miles.

Ilija Trojanow is the author Mumbai to Mecca (Haus Publishing) and the best-selling novel The Collector of Worlds, for which he was awarded the Leipzig Book Fair Prize.
